House calls for radar upgrade at Airports

The House of Representatives has urged the ministry of aviation to improve safety in the country’s airspace by upgrading the Radar Coverage equipment.
The equipment aids air traffic controllers access image of aircrafts.
In a motion, representative Ahmed Munir said information from Nigerian airspace management agency indicates that the safety of Nigeria’s airspace may be compromised because in the event of equipment break down, air traffic controllers would have to resort to manual procedure which could be inaccurate.
Such situations increase likelihood of aircrafts collision and near misses, thereby putting passengers and pilots at risk.
The House therefore urges immediate measure to upgrade the total radar coverage of Nigeria, TRACON, in cognizance of the fact that the contract to effect upgrade was terminated since 2015
