The Nigerian Air Force has confirmed one of its Alpha Jet aircrafts returning from a successful air interdiction mission between the boundaries of Zamfara and Kaduna State crashed in Zamfara state on 18 July 2021.

In a statement by NAF DOPRI Air Commodore Edward Gabwet, the Alpha jet came under intense enemy fire which led to its crash in Zamfara. However, the pilot of the aircraft, Flight Lieutenant Abayomi Dairo, successfully ejected from the aircraft and sought refuge in nearby settlements before being rescued by NAF special forces.

An online news site, the Daily Post had earlier reported the crash of an alpha jet in Kaduna state which the NAF refuted but said it would confirm if there had been such an occurrence in its other operational areas. Meanwhile, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao has commended the quick response of the NAF special forces and Nigerian Army troops in locating the crash site and rescuing the soldier while also giving assurance that no civilians were harmed in the the entire operation.
