After five days of keen contests among young players from four South West States at the maiden Major General Adeyinka Adebayo Memorial Tennis Masters, the curtains have fallen on the competition that started with over 40 participants from South West states of the country except for Lagos and Ogun states.
The colorful final held at the Tennis Center, Trade Fair Complex, along Iyin Road in Ado was graced by the commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Micheal Awopetu who represented governor Kayode Fayemi as the Special guest while the sponsor of the tournament, Otunba Niyi Adebayo (minister of Trades and Investment) was represented by the commissioner for Works, Mr Sola Adebayo.
Also in attendance were the Oluyin of Iyin-Ekiti Oba Adeola Ajakaye, Bishop Felix Ajakaiye and SA to the governor on Economic matters, Prof.Bolaji Aluko as well as the Ekiti Sports Council officials led by its chairman, Mrs Olusola Osetoba who all calmly enjoyed actions of both the boys under 14 and girls under 16 finals from start to finish
The highly competitive boys under 14 final pushed every spectator to the edge of their seats as Mubarak Ganiyu from Oyo state was a hard nut to crack for Seun Ogunsakin from Ekiti state who eventually carried the day after lots of tenacity, focus and hardwork.
Both boys who also featured in the under 16 final are familiar foes and the under 14 final was no exception as it went down the wire before Seun could edge out Mubarak for the second time in two days.
Success Ogunjobi of Ekiti state beat Peace Agbeje from Ondo state 6-3 and 6-1 at the final of the girls 14 and under,
The Ekiti State Chairman of the Tennis Association, Mr.Yemi Owoseni commended the sponsor of the competition, the minister for Trades and Investment, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo for his support and for joining the tennis association in its quest to use tennis to empower the youth.
He also acknowledged the efforts of the state government at providing an enabling environment for the staging of the competition aimed at helping tennis players from South West Nigeria to exhibit among themselves and sharpen their skills for better performances ahead of future championships.
Some of the players described the competition as a welcome Development which had further sharpen their skills and playing patterns ,and called for more of such as it will prepare them better for future competitions.
The competition was sponsored by a former Governor of Ekiti State, who is now Minister of Trade and Investment, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo in memory of his late father, Major General Adeyinka Adebayo.
