The Zamfara State Police Command has refuted a media report claiming the killing of 23 persons during a clash between Vigilante and Fulani traders at Dansadau market in Maru Local Government Area of the state.
The command in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer Suretendant of Police, Muhammad Shehu described the story as not only unfounded but misleading and a calculated attempt to create tension and instill fear in the minds of the citizens as well as undermine the ongoing effort of to achieving lasting peace in the state.
To set the record straight the statement says police operatives on special market patrol had last Friday repelled an invasion by more than 200 suspected bandits who stormed Dansadau weekly market with the intent to distablise business activities.
The statement added that during the encounter four traders who were fleeing for safety got injured and were taken to hospital for treatment.
The Police Public Relations Officer who noted that the police operatives have since commenced a serious manhunt of the perpetrators of the dastardly act,also said investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances behind the attempted invasion.
The Police however urged members of the public to desist from taking law into their hands but always report any suspicious person or movement to the nearest security outfit for prompt response.
