The Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi, has presented monetary compensations to the first batch of #EndSARS panel beneficiaries following the recommendations of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry into Allegations of Human Rights Violations Against the Defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad and Others, to the state government.
In addition to the award of compensations, the state government has taken deliberate actions to strengthen its access to justice institutions with a view to ensuring a speedy and effective response to citizens’ complaints of human rights violations.
Governor Kayode Fayemi said compensating the victims is one of the interventions in achieving access to justice for all and most importantly making sure that there is a meaningful way of dealing with human rights violations when they happen.
He said it will contribute in no small measures to Financial, physical and psychological injury they have suffered, having recorded their own share in police brutality and the violence that erupted in some parts of the state during the EndSARS protest.
Chairman of the Panel, Justice Cornelius Akintayo retired noted that the judicial Panel having received and Investigated 85 petitions on violence against individuals and destruction of properties in every part of Ekiti State during protest as well as Evaluated evidences presented and other surrounding circumstances, recommended compensation and other remedial measures where appropriate.
The panel commenced seating in November 2020 and received petitions from 85 members of the public on various allegations of human rights violations.
